Why you should not use keystroke logging software! There have been recent changes in the computer spyware/ anti-spyware
software arena. I will summarize them here: Software keyloggers record all keystrokes/ screen captures and
store them on the computer hard drive. This consumes hard drive space and
uses CPU cycles (slowing down the computer). There are hundreds of
software keylogger programs available. As more keyloggers have been
released, the attack against them has been increasing. Many popular
anti-virus scanners, including McAfee, have added detection of software
keyloggers to their list of capabilities. No matter how well a software
keylogger is written, there is always going to be software that can detect it. Anti-spy programs detect and/or remove spyware from the computer
system, and are gaining a greater presence in the market. Some popular
programs are: SpyCop, SpyDetect, NetCop and SpyGuard. SpyCop (www.spycop.com)
advertises that it can detect over 300 commercially available key logger
programs. Anti-virus programs are also adding detection of spy-ware to
their list of capabilities. Erasers delete the history of visited web sites, e-mails, chat
rooms, and other activities. Programs such as Evidence Destroyer, and
Don't Be Caught! address this issue. These programs are great for erasing your
tracks, but also may erase things that were not intended. The U.S. Department of Justice recommends that a banner notice indicating the keystroke monitoring policy be placed on all computer systems that will be conducting keystroke monitoring. The banner should give clear and unequivocal notice to intruders that by signing on and using the system, they are expressly consenting to having their keystrokes monitored or recorded during their computer session. If an unauthorized intruder downloads an authorized user's file, keystroke monitoring will record both the intruder's download command and the name of the compromised accessed file. |
